Georgia Layton

Funeral services for Georgia Layton, 85, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.Mrs. Layton died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.She was born June 18, 1923, in Williamsburg, the daughter of Ira and Elsie Quillan Collins.She was a graduate of the Kansas State School for the Blind and received a Bachelor of Arts. in education, with an emphasis on Special Education for the Blind, from Kansas University. She worked as a home teacher for newly blinded adults for several years, and was a teacher at the Kansas Neurological Institute and the Kansas Rehabilitation Center for the Blind before retiring in 1992. She then worked as a part-time teacher until the spring of 2002.Mrs. Layton was a member of the American Council for the Blind, National Association for Blind Teachers, and Kansas State School for the Blind Alumni Association. She was a president of the Topeka Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, a past president of the Kansas Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and received the Eleanor A. Wilson Award given for outstanding service to the blind in 1995. She was the chairwoman of the Esther V. Taylor Scholarship committee.She married Jess W. Layton in Pomona. He preceded her in death in February 1987.Mrs. Layton was also preceded in death by six brothers and a sister.Survivors include two daughters, Crystol Lucas and Kathy Burchett, both of Lawrence; three grandchildren, Jeff, Scott and Lisa; five great-grandchildren; and her guide dog, Freddie. The family will meet friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
