Phyllis June Hynd

Funeral services for Phyllis June Hynd, 73, Garden City, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.Mrs. Hynd died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at the Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.She was born Nov. 30, 1935, in Lawrence, the daughter of Harold Nathan and Nora Mae Herren McNeil. She was a graduate of Hiawatha High School and Southern Nazarene University. Mrs. Hynd was a lifelong member of the Church of the Nazarene. She earned a registered nurse degree from St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. She received 15 months of midwifery training in Bellshill, Scotland. For 36 years, she was a missionary nurse, teacher and midwife in Manzini, Swaziland, for the Church of the Nazarene, and was also in private practice with her husband at the Manzini Medical Centre. During this time, she was a nurse and minister to the king and the royal family of Swaziland. She married Dr. Samuel Wilson Hynd in January 1976 at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Mo. He survives of Manzini, Swaziland.Other survivors include three stepdaughters, Elisabeth Hynd, Manzini, Swaziland, and Audrey and Margie Hynd, both of London; three stepgrandchildren, Rosemary, Mark and Tracy Van den Berg; a sister, Judith A. Patrick and husband, Don, Garden City; a niece, Whitney Greeson; and a nephew, Casey Patrick. The family will meet friends from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
