Lee Henrik Christensen 1974 - 2008 Pittsburg
Services for Lee Henrik Christensen, 34, Pittsburg, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg, with the Rev. Kathleen Owsley officiating. Inurnment will be at the Timmons Chapel Columbarium on the Pittsburg State University campus.Mr. Christensen died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, from a brain tumor.He was born July 12, 1974, in Joplin, Mo., the son of Lee R. and Sandra Greer Christensen. He attended George Nettels and Lakeside elementary schools in Pittsburg and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1993. He graduated from Brown University in Providence, R.I., in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in comparative literature. While at Brown he spent the 1995-1996 school year in Copenhagen studying Danish language, literature and culture through Denmark's International Study Program. He also studied advanced Swedish at Lund University, Lund, Sweden, in 1997. He then worked as an English lecturer at Ostrov Gymnazium in Ostrov, Czech Republic, from 1998 to 2000. He was the program assistant for the Kansas City teaching fellows initiative from 2001 to 2002 and selection manager for the New Teacher Project in Atlanta in 2003.He received a Master of Science degree in education from Kansas University in May 2005.Mr. Christensen was a graduate assistant at the International Student and Scholar Services office at KU, where he served as orientation coordinator and part-time immigration adviser. He was employed in the ISSS office at the time of his diagnosis in January 2006.He enjoyed traveling, making friends in many parts of the world and spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed literature, tennis, hiking, living a healthy lifestyle and leaving a low impact on the environment, and was a fan of the New York Yankees, Kansas City Royals, Kansas Jayhawks, Pittsburg State Gorillas and the Georgia Bulldogs. Survivors include his parents, of the home; a sister, Greer A.H. Lawson and husband Josh, Aiken, S.C.; a niece, Lane Alexandra Helen Lawson, Aiken, S.C.; two great-aunts, Frances Pate, Ashburn, Ga., and Marcella Christensen, Toledo, Iowa; an aunt, Anne Mitchell, Buford, Ga.; two uncles, Jere Greer and wife Julie, Thomaston, Ga., and Larry Christensen and wife Jane, Rockford, Ill.; and six first cousins, Jeremy Mitchell, Brooks Mitchell Vadner, Powell Greer Hosey, Patrick Greer, Scott Christensen and Michelle Christensen Rock.Mr. Christensen was preceded in death by his grandparents, Henrik and Helen Christensen, Toledo, Iowa, and Walter C. and Darotha Greer, Buford, Ga.
