Wilbur Dean “Will” Hess

Funeral services for Wilbur Dean “Will” Hess, 81, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.Mr. Hess died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.He was born April 22, 1927, in Larned, the son of George Alvin and Ruth May Ewing Hess. He attended Larned schools and earned a bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University. He served in the U.S. Air Force.Mr. Hess was a professional photographer and photojournalist. He photographed many weddings and was featured in Life Magazine. He also worked for many newspapers, including the Lawrence Journal-World. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the National Press Photographers Association.He married Sue Irene Thomson Hyde on July 30, 1962, in Idaho Springs, Colo. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include four stepchildren, Mary Ann Hyde Johnson, Overland Park; Joe Hyde, Lawrence; Jane Hyde Hawkins, Wichita; and Susan Hyde Holmes, Santa Fe, N.M.; a brother, Dennis Hess, Portland, Ore.; and five grandchildren.Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Humane Society, sent in care of the funeral home.Online condolences may be sent at rumsey-yost.com.
