Louise S. Hazard

Funeral service for Louise S. Hazard, 96, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Community Building in Saguache, Colo. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Saguache. Mrs. Hazard died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at her daughter’s home. She was born July 20, 1912, in Hastings, Neb., the daughter of John Samuel and Elsie Louise Crites Spriggle. She graduated as valedictorian of both her high school and college classes. She graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan College in 1934 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in classical language and a minor in German, and a Bachelor of Science degree in education and English with minors in history and social studies. She won many awards ranging from archery and tennis championships to scholastic gold medals. She completed a master’s degree in library science from Adams State College in 1972. She was a Lawrence resident since August 1998.Mrs. Hazard taught for 48 years, seven at high schools in Nebraska and for 41 years in Saguache, Colo. She primarily taught English, Latin and various social studies courses. She served on the Girl Scout Council, library board and museum board. She was a member of First United Methodist, where she was a pianist for many years. She belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma, the Monte Vista chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and the Saguache Women’s Club. She was honored with the creation of the Louise S. Hazard award that goes to the outstanding girl athlete at Saguache High School. In Lawrence, Mrs. Hazard participated in the conversation group at the Schiefelbusch Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, the Senior Center Adult Day program, and she enjoyed interacting with caregivers from Trinity In-Home Care. She also continued to enjoy playing bridge. She married Claude Howard Hazard on May 27, 1943, in Saguache, Colo. He died Dec. 4, 1980. She was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, John Bunce, July 18, 1991; a sister, Katherine Crites Sheldon, May 11, 2003; and a daughter, Judith Olson, also died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, four hours after her mother. Survivors include three daughters: Vivian Joan Curtis and husband Chuck, Creede, Colo.; Betty Louise Bunce, Lawrence; Elsie Leona Hoag and husband Bruce, Vicenza, Italy; a son, Claude Henry Hazard and wife Cynthia, Panama City, Fla.; a son-in-law, Kenneth Olson, Manitou Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren, Ed Johnson, Doug and Jeff Curtis, Steven and Kathie Bunce, and Tim Hazard; and five great-grandchildren.
