Fritz William Benteman

Funeral services for Fritz William Benteman, 85, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Lawrence Heights Christian Church. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery with military honors.Mr. Benteman died Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Colmery-O’Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka.He was born May 21, 1923, in Frankfort, the son of Fritz William Sr. and Erma A. Kipp Benteman.Mr. Benteman served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a Teamster and worked for Lawrence Construction for 20 years. He worked at Laird Noller as a driver for 19 years. Mr. Benteman was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Alford-Clarke Post 852 in Lawrence.He married Mary L. Nichols on Jan. 19, 1957. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include three daughters, Karen Bentemann Salber, Judy Tremain and Amber Tremain, all of Lawrence; two sons, Dale Tremain, St. Paul, Minn., and Michael Tremain, Kansas City, Mo.; five brothers, Norman, Frank, Lee, Melton and George; four sisters, Mable, Bertha, Martha and Florence; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nada Coleen Schmidt, and two sisters, Susie and Erma.The family suggests memorials to Lawrence Heights Christian Church or the Fritz Benteman Memorial Fund, sent in care of the mortuary.The family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.Online condolences may be sent to www.warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Benteman.
