Memorial services for Bernard J. Hill Jr., 78, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Inurnment with military honors by American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 will be in Deay Cemetery.Mr. Hill died Monday, April 14, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born Jan. 27, 1930, in Tonganoxie, the son of Bernard J. Sr. and Effie D. Belt Hill. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence.Mr. Hill served in the U.S. Army as SFC with the 3rd Division during the Korean War in 1951 and 1952. He worked for Lawrence Freight Line for 37 years and retired in 1993.He was a 50-year member of Teamsters Union 696, a life member of American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 in Lawrence and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 852. He was a charter member of Douglas County Trail Riders, and a member of Kanwaka 4-H Club and Lawrence AARP Chapter 1696.Mr. Hill also was a member of the National and Central State Corriente Cattle Association and raised and showed cattle in judged and roping events in central and western region shows.He married Alma Darlene LaDuke on June 9, 1951, in Lawrence. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a daughter, Carol Sue Barry and husband Tim, Germantown, Md.; a son, Dennis and wife Leslie, Baldwin City; five grandchildren, Tyler Hill, Marcy and Daniel Lang, and Michael and Elizabeth Barry; two sisters, Martha Thornton, Lawrence, and Juanita Transmeier, Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.The family will greet friends from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday at the mortuary before the services.The family suggests memorials to American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 or Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care, sent in care of the mortuary.Online condolences may be sent at www.warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Hill.
