Walter C. Bryant 1919 - 2008
Funeral services for Walter C. Bryant, 88, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Bryant died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.He was born Dec. 15, 1919, in Oswego, the son of Columbus Boone and Inis Ann Black Bryant. He moved to Lawrence in 1954. Mr. Bryant served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He received a Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars. He had been a farmer for nine years in Oswego, and also worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons. He retired in 1982 from the U.S. Postal Service in Lawrence, where he worked as a letter carrier for 28 years.He was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 22, American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14, Veterans of Foreign Wars 3399, the National Association of Letter Carriers and First United Methodist Church in Lawrence. He enjoyed his lawn, garden and flowers.Mr. Bryant married Reba J. Hartwell on Nov. 11, 1945, in Altamont. She survives, of the home. Other survivors include two daughters, Margaret L. Hada, Stafford, Texas, Linda L. Jones, Kansas City, Mo.; a son, Steven R., Lenexa; a sister, Lorene Kring, Topeka; four grandchildren, Tracy, Jennifer, Elizabeth and Ashley; and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by two sisters and 12 brothers.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.The family suggests memorials to Heart of America Hospice or First United Methodist Church, sent in care of the mortuary.Online condolences may sent at <a href="http://www.warrenmcelwain.com">www.warrenmcelwain.com</a>, subject: Bryant.
