Philip Racknor Chappell

Topeka – Mass of Christian Burial for Philip Racknor Chappell, 83, Topeka, formerly of Lawrence, will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Topeka. Burial with military honors will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka.Mr. Chappell died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at St. Francis Health Center in Topeka.He was born May 8, 1924, in Topeka, the son of Arch and Ellen Racknor Chappell. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1942 and attended Kansas State University. He graduated from Washburn University in 1949 with a degree in business administration.Mr. Chappell served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a B-26 pilot in the European Theater. He was also in the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from Curtis 100 Inc., where he was a division manager.He was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, where he served as a eucharistic minister to the homebound and was involved in the Adoration Prayer Group. He enjoyed golf, model airplanes, traveling, planing his high school reunions, World War II history, reading and his family.Mr. Chappell married Ann Middleton on April 15, 1950, in Topeka. They shared 57 years of marriage. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Mustain, Lenexa, and Amy Scanlan and husband John, Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, David W. and wife Cathy, Penryn, Calif.; three grandchildren, Shannon Dick, and Phillip and Claire Chappell; three great-grandchildren, John Michael Sword, Karina Mitchell and Nicholas Shirley; a brother, Warren and wife Cilly, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Betsy Chappell, Kansas City, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Joan Schooley, Topeka; and a brother-in-law, Harry Middleton, Austin, Texas.Friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. followed by a parish rosary at 6 p.m. Sunday.The family suggests memorials to Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 W.
