S. Mae Holderman

A celebration of life for S. Mae Holderman, 84, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Private inurnment will be at a later date in Maple Grove Cemetery in Lecompton.Mrs. Holderman died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.She was born Sept. 11, 1923, in Williamstown, the daughter of Grover C. and Leah Masters Everett. She lived in Lawrence since 1943.Mrs. Holderman was a retired secretary. She worked at Hercules Inc. and Capitol Federal Savings & Loan and retired in December 1984.She was a life member of the Lecompton Historical Society and Pilot Club International. She was a former president of the Lawrence chapter and governor of Kansas-Missouri District 20 of Pilot Club International. She served as a supervising judge for the Lawrence Election Board for 12 years and volunteered at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for 15 years.She enjoyed gardening, canning, making quilts and family history. She was known in the area as the “Pickle Lady.” She had her handmade historic Lecompton quilt displayed in then-Gov. John Carlin’s office in 1982 at the request of the Kansas Travel and Tourism Department and it is now on display at the Lecompton Territorial Capitol Museum.She married Alden E. “Wally” Holderman on July 31, 1945, in Yates Center. He survives, of the home.Other survivors include a daughter, Shirley M. Funk, Lawrence; a son, Richard E. Holderman, Emmaus, Pa.; five grandchildren, Leah, Jennifer, Beth Ann, Nicole and Matthew; and six great-grandchildren, Veronica, Leeanne, Sahrin, Aaron, Ella and Colin.
