Baldwin City – Funeral services for Lyle Windon North, 84, Baldwin City, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Baldwin City. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Baldwin City.He died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007, at Baldwin Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.He was born July 18, 1923, in rural Franklin County, the son of Frank Lyle and Daisy Vivian Jones North. He grew up in rural Ottawa. He attended grade school in Appanoose and graduated from Appanoose High School in 1941.Mr. North joined the U.S. Army on Feb. 1, 1943, as a clerk typist and was honorably discharged as a sergeant on March 20, 1946. He served in the U.S. Air Force from Sept. 7, 1951, to Sept. 28, 1954, during the Korean conflict and achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant in the 810th Air Police Squadron.He worked for Pepsi Cola and Joel Cutting Wholesale in Ottawa from 1955-61. He then worked for Farmland Industries’ fertilizer plant in Lawrence for 24 years and retired in 1985. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, gardening and especially helping his neighbors with various chores with his John Deere tractor.Mr. North married Ruby Lilloween Grider on June 19, 1952, at First Baptist Church in Ottawa. They shared more than 55 years of marriage. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a daughter, Sheila A. Rugan and husband Kurt A., Ellinwood; a son, Eric A. and wife Pamela, Topeka; two brothers, Harry, Baldwin City, and Dean, Sarasota, Fla.; a sister, Margaret Burke, San Diego; four grandchildren, Brent A. and Heather R. Rugan, Maggie E. and Christopher M. North; a great-granddaughter, Penelope R. Rugan; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Baldwin City.
