Betty J. Visser

A celebration of life for Betty J. Visser, 56, Lawrence, will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Babcock Place, 1700 Mass. She donated her body to Kansas University Medical Center.Ms. Visser died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.She was born Aug. 17, 1951, in Holland, Mich., the daughter of John and Virginia Schuyler Visser. She attended the University of Denver and the Chicago Art Institute. She graduated from the University of Iowa’s School of Fine Arts and earned a master’s degree in library science from Emporia State University in 1978.Ms. Visser lived in New York City and worked at Cornell University. She returned to Kansas in 1976 and lived in Emporia. She later moved to Kansas City and worked at the Kansas University Medical Library. She moved to Lawrence in 1986 and was a past recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award from the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.She married Anthony Kuhn on Dec. 27, 1971. They had lived in Europe and traveled for one year. They divorced in 1977. Survivors include her mother, Lawrence; and three sisters, Mary Frances Visser, Mankato, Minn., Nancy Visser, New York City, and Martha Visser, Jupiter, Fla.The family suggests memorials to Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center, 200 Maine.Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.Online condolences may be sent at www.rumsey-yost.com
