Horace M. Mason Jr.

Winfield – Memorial services for Horace M. Mason Jr., 91, Winfield, will be at a later date. His body has been donated to the Kansas University School of Medicine.Mr. Mason died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield.He was born Jan. 15, 1916, in Indianapolis, the son of Horace M. Sr. and Grace Connell Mason. He was raised in Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1934. He received a journalism degree in 1937 and a master’s degree in education, both from Kansas University. He later became a certified guidance counselor. He moved to Winfield in 1971.Mr. Mason served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a second lieutenant in the South Pacific. He worked as a sports publicity director before serving in the military. He taught government and journalism classes in Kansas City, Kan., and also worked for the Government Research Bureau for two years. He worked as a guidance counselor for the Iola school district for 17 years. He taught classes at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center and also worked for Cowley County Job Service Center. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield.He married Mary Marie Glaser on Aug. 14, 1949, in Tulsa, Okla. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a son, Randy, Prairie Village; a daughter, Kathy Mason, Lawrence; a brother, James, Leawood; and four grandchildren.The family suggests memorials to the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield, sent in care of Miles Funeral Service, 4001 E.
