Jay Hughes Chaffee

A celebration of life for Jay Hughes Chaffee, 47, Ottawa, was Nov. 18 at his home north of Ottawa. A second celebration of life will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Clay Center.Mr. Chaffee died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007, in Douglas County.He was born Sept. 13, 1960, in Clay Center, the son of Gary and Carolyn Hughes Chaffee. He was raised in the Countryside community, southeast of Clay Center. He graduated from Clay Center Community High School in 1979 and later from Salina Area Technical School. He lived in Lawrence and Ottawa.He was a self-employed carpenter in the Clay Center and Lawrence areas, where he built many homes. He enjoyed his work, spending time with his children and helping his neighbors. He married Eva Jane Ferguson on May 19, 1984, in Clyde. They shared more than 23 years of marriage. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include five sons, Drake H., Dekota J., Delton R., Daithan M. and Daus S., all of Ottawa; two daughters, Mersadie and Micahshea, both of Ottawa; his parents, Gary and Carolyn Chaffee, Clay Center; two brothers, Rick and wife Marsha and Mike and wife Trudy, both of Clay Center; and a sister, Garla Pierson and husband Pat, Clay Center.The family suggests memorials to the Jay H.
