Fred E. Broeker

A graveside service for Fred E. Broeker, 85, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors will be by Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion.Mr. Broeker died Saturday, May 26, 2007, at the Colmery-O’Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka.He was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Lawrence, the son of John Fred Carl and Margarethe C. Bayer Broeker. He attended Lawrence schools and Kansas University.Mr. Broeker joined the Marines and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He worked as a trooper with the Kansas Highway Patrol and as a police officer in Texas and California. He was Douglas County sheriff from 1961 to 1965.He was a member of American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 in Lawrence.Survivors include two sisters, Margaret B. Sanders and Marianne C. Hadl, both of Lawrence; a son, Michael Broeker; and a daughter, Christine Broeker.Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
