Edwin A. Bracken 1925 - 2007 Lawrence
A celebration of life for Edwin A. Bracken, 81, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery.Mr. Bracken died Sunday, May 20, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born Nov. 14, 1925, in Wilson County, the son of Stephen and Alice Helton Bracken.Mr. Bracken served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.He retired in 1992 after 11 years as an administrative officer with Kansas University. He was honored as KU employee of the year in 1990.Before that, he and his wife co-owned a Dairy Queen store in Carthage, Mo., for 27 years. He also had a commercial pilot's license and ran a charter service out of Carthage Airport.He was a member of First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Men and was a certified lay speaker. He enjoyed woodworking and shared his talent with many churches in the area.He married Donna Northrop on June 16, 1946, in Wichita. She died Sept. 29, 2004.A brother also preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter, Sheila Lawson, Overland Park; a brother, Maurice, Flint, Texas; two sisters, Ellen Hopkins, Fresno, Calif., and Marvelle Crigger, Lee's Summit, Mo.; and two granddaughters, Kelly Van Deven and Jennifer Lawson. The family will greet friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
