Virgene Graybill Crane

Memorial services for Virgene Graybill Crane, 81, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Manhattan with the Rev. Jim Reed officiating. Cremation is planned.Mrs. Crane died Wednesday, May 2, 2007, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.She was born June 19, 1925, at Renovo, Pa., the daughter of David and Gertrude Beatrice Gates Graybill. She grew up in Elmira, N.Y., where she attended local schools and graduated from Elmira High School in 1943. She later graduated from Keuka College School of Nursing in New York. She lived in Livingston, N.J., and Sidney, N.Y., before she moved to Manhattan in 1961. She had lived in Lawrence since 2000.Mrs. Crane was a member of First United Methodist Church in Manhattan and served on many church boards, including the board of directors and board of missions. She spent many volunteer hours with the Red Cross and Homecare and Hospice. She was also a member of First United Methodist Church in Lawrence.She married Dr. Charles H. “Pete” Crane on June 7, 1947, in Elmira. He survives.Other survivors include three daughters, Nancy Jean Crane, Lawrence, Janet Lynn Boucher and husband Michael, Leavenworth, and Holly Ann Smith and husband Bill, Gardner; a son, David Charles Crane and partner Jeffrey Wells, Washington, D.C.; two stepgrandchildren, Jennifer and Ivan Smith; three stepgreat-grandchildren; two nieces, Gay Weiss, Manhattan, and Barbara Bleaking, Wilmington, N.C.; and a nephew, James Bachle, Madison, Wis.The family will receive friends after the services in the church fellowship hall.The family suggests memorials to First United Methodist Church of Lawrence, sent in care of Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, 1317 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan 66502.
