Memorial services for Marlyn Frizell Brown, 80, Ozawkie, will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Lawrence Arts Center.Mrs. Brown died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, at her home from Alzheimer’s disease.She was born Jan. 26, 1927, in Larned, the daughter of William Walter and Idaesther Truan Frizell. She graduated from Larned High School and received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Kansas University in 1951. She earned a master’s degree in fine arts in textiles in 1973, and went on to teach weaving. She lived in the Kansas City area before moving to Lawrence in 1967 and made her home on Perry Lake since 1987.Mrs. Brown had a lifetime commitment to promoting the arts. She opened and operated Valley West Galleries in 1972 in Lawrence. She was a founding member of Kansas Artists and Craftsman Association and a member of the Kansas Arts Commission, the Santa Fe Trail Center advisory board, Junior League of Kansas City and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.She was involved in the creation of the Lawrence Arts Center and was honored for that effort by the Lawrence Jaycees as Woman of the Year in 1975. She married Robert B. Brown on March 29, 1952, at First Presbyterian Church in Larned. He survives, of the home. Other survivors include a son, Craig B. Brown and wife Rae Ann, Lawrence; a daughter, Cynthia S. Brown, Santa Cruz, Calif.; a brother, William Frizell Jr., Sun City, Ariz.; a sister, Sue Winter, Enid, Okla.; two grandchildren, Kelly Evans and Christopher Brown; and two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Walker Evans.She was preceded in death by her parents and a twin sister, Marian L’dora Frizell.The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Arts Center, sent in care of Ann Evans, 940 N.H., Lawrence 66044.Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.Online condolences may be sent at www.rumsey-yost.com.
