John W. Brann Jr.

Funeral services for John W. Brann Jr., 88, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.Mr. Brann died Monday, March 12, 2007, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.He was born April 24, 1918, in South Haven, the son of John W. and Mona Pearce Brann. He graduated from South Haven High School in 1936.Mr. Brann served in the U.S. Army during World War II in England, France, Belgium and Luxembourg. He attained the rank of master sergeant.Mr. Brann was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. He worked in Salt Lake City for 10 years and was transferred to Lawrence in 1956. He retired in 1975 after 28 years of service.He lived in Baldwin City from 1984 to 1999 and then returned to Lawrence.He was a member of First United Methodist Church and American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14.He married Ruby L. Gwillim on Jan. 12, 1946, in Wichita. She died April 1, 2006.Survivors include a son, John W. III, Olathe; two daughters, Patricia F. Grewing, Tecumseh, and Barbara M. Michal, Lookout Mountain, Ga.; a brother, Willard, Jefferson City, Mo.; two sisters, Flora Zimmerman, South Haven, and Rosemary Overton, Ponca City, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.The family suggests memorials to the church, 946 Vt., Lawrence 66044.Online condolences may be sent at www.rumsey-yost.com.
