Charity L. “Jerrie” Wingate Dunbar

Funeral services for Charity L. “Jerrie” Wingate Dunbar, 92, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Dunbar died Thursday, June 14, 2007, at Manor Care Nursing Home in Overland Park.She was born March 29, 1915, in Papillion, Neb., the daughter of John Creighton “Crate” and Amanda “Betsy” Dragoo Wingate. She was raised in Buckingham, Colo. She moved to Oskaloosa in 1948 and then to Lawrence in 1973.Mrs. Dunbar and her husband owned coal and silver mines in Colorado and operated a dairy farm in Oskaloosa for 26 years before they retired. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and Retired Eagles Auxiliary.She enjoyed music and was organist for many years at Oskaloosa Methodist Church and Centenary Methodist Church. She also enjoyed racing miniature horses.She married Francis T. “F.T.” Dunbar on Oct. 22, 1937, in Denver. He died Feb. 20, 1996. Survivors include three daughters, Jo Delle Tustison, Ames, Iowa, Donna Backus, Yipsilanti, Mich., and Mabel “Peg” Liebert, Overland Park; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jonnie Ruth Cordes; a son-in law, Chester Cordes; and a grandchild, Dale Lee McAtee.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at the mortuary.The family suggests memorials to the Oskaloosa High School Memorial Fund for Scholarships, sent in care of the mortuary.Online condolences may be sent at www.warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Dunbar.
