Mary L. Newman

Funeral services for Mary L. Newman, 86, Winchester, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Winchester United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.Mrs. Newman died Friday, July 27, 2007, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.She was born July 10, 1921, in Atchison, the daughter of Stanley and Flossie “Granny” Anderson Kaufman. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1939 and attended Stricler’s Business College in Topeka. She had lived in Winchester for 56 years.Mrs. Newman owned and operated MKB Variety Store in Winchester and worked at the Jefferson County Courthouse in the driver’s license office. She worked for Dr. F.W. Huston in Winchester for 40 years as an office assistant and medical clerk and retired in 1993.She was a member of Winchester United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Nortonville Flower Club, Knapsackers Camping Club and Davis-Gibson American Legion Auxiliary Unit 387 in Winchester. She was also member of the Town and Country Bowling league in Oskaloosa.She married James Raymond “Gov” Keaton. He died March 16, 1952. She married Leonard E. “Red” Newman on Sept. 16, 1956. He died in July of 1989.Survivors include two sons, Leonard “Len” Newman, Oskaloosa, Robert “Bob” Keaton, Meriden; four daughters, Bonnie Schneider, Ozawkie, Kristie Scrivner, Winchester, Kathy Spann, Olathe, Amy Schneider, Nortonville; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Oskaloosa.
