Memorial services for Jessie Underwood Starr, 96, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor. Inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Starr died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.She was born Feb. 26, 1910, in Lawrence, the daughter of Junius and Flora Hinckley Underwood.She grew up in the family home at 643 Tenn. in Old West Lawrence and graduated from Liberty Memorial High School. She attended Kansas University, where she studied art and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi social sorority.Mrs. Starr lived in Charlotte, N.C., Birmingham, Ala., and Winston-Salem, N.C., before she returned to Lawrence in the 1970s. She worked for Jan’s Interiors and volunteered at Watkins Community Museum of History and Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.She married Mansfield Spencer Starr on July 6, 1936, at Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. He died in 1964.Mrs. Starr also was preceded in death by six sisters, Alice U. Krum, Addie U. Penny, Fay U. Armstrong, Mary U. Ringler, Edna U. Arnett and Hattie Underwood; and four brothers, Bill, Pete, Junius and Emery Underwood.
