Walter L. "Wolf" Montgomery 1930 - 2007 Leavenworth
Funeral services for Walter L. "Wolf" Montgomery, 76, Leavenworth, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Barnett-Larkin-Brown Funeral Home in Leavenworth. Burial will be in Mount Muncie Cemetery.Mr. Montgomery died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at his home.He was born July 25, 1930, in Bain City, the son of John N. and Jennie E. "Topsy" Wells Montgomery. He attended high school in Leavenworth and Lawrence.Mr. Montgomery was recruited by the St. Louis Cardinals organization as a left-handed pitcher and played for them from 1948 to 1953. He scouted for the Baltimore Orioles for several years. He was a substitute sports reporter for the Leavenworth Times in the 1980s. He also submitted jokes to the "Tonight Show." He was a published author and wrote "Wolf's Bain City."He worked as a salesman for L.B. Price in the Leavenworth area. He owned and operated Leavenworth Home Supply and TV Repair for several years. He also coached an American Legion baseball team.He married Dorothy Bailey in 1950, and the marriage lasted until 1962. He married Louise Bequette in October of 1962. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include four sons, Scott, Lawrence, Matthew, Eudora, Walt Jr., Leavenworth, and Bart, Lansing; six daughters, Melissa Montgomery Arnett and Nancy Montgomery Strain, both of Lawrence, Darcia Murrish, Overland Park, and Carol Goodwin, Sue Snider and Cathy Milnark, all of Leavenworth; two brothers, Wayne "Rock", Ventura, Calif., and Gary, Tampa, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.The family suggests memorials to the Walter "Wolf" Montgomery Memorial Fund, a sports-related memorial to be designated at a later date, sent in care of Barnett-Larkin-Brown Funeral Home, 707 S. Sixth St., Leavenworth 66048.
