Mary Jeannette Rainey Farmer

Memorial services for Mary Jeannette Rainey Farmer, 93, Sac City, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Sac City. Private burial in Oakland Cemetery will precede the service.Mrs. Farmer died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.She was born Sept. 13, 1913, in Estherville, Iowa, the daughter of James and Mary Ralston Rainey. She graduated from Estherville High School and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota, where she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She received a master’s degree from the University of Denver and continued her education through course work from Drake University and the University of Iowa. She was a winter resident of Sun City, Ariz., after she retired.Mrs. Farmer managed the dining room in the Park Hotel from 1937 to 1957. She then taught English at Sac Community High School and retired in 1981. She was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church and later First Presbyterian Church. She volunteered for Community Chest and the building of a new elementary school. She received the Distinguished Service Award from the Iowa Council of Teachers of English in 1979 for outstanding work in her field. She was active in P.E.O., Book Club, Contract Bridge, Loring Hospital Benefit Bridge, Sac Country Club, Palm Brook Country Club and many other social activities.She married Keith Farmer on June 16, 1937, in Estherville, Iowa. He died Jan. 2, 1979.Survivors include two daughters, Mary K Sine, Overland Park, and Joan Parr, Lawrence; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
