Robert Berkeley Green

Memorial services for Robert Berkeley Green, 97, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Inurnment will be at Pioneer Cemetery.Mr. Green died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.He was born July 28, 1909, in Pittsburgh, the son of Charles O. and Mary S. Andrews Green. He received a Bachelor of Arts in painting from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 1931, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Yale University in New Haven, Conn., in 1935.Mr. Green served in the U.S. Army as a quarter master from 1941 to 1944. He was an assistant professor of drawing and painting at Kansas University for 33 years and retired as professor of art emeritus. He earlier was an art supervisor at public schools in Columbus, Ga., and a graduate assistant and instructor of life drawing at Yale School of Fine Arts.His artwork is in collections at the Smithsonian Institution, Carnegie Mellon University, Yale University and Spencer Museum, and in numerous private collections. He won a Prix de Rome Prize in painting for a two-year fellowship at the American Academy in Rome in 1935, a third year at the American Academy and the Alumni Medal for Mural Painting in 1937.Mr. Green was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence and served as a deacon. He married Miriam L. Berg on April 2, 1965. She died Dec. 16, 2000. Survivors include two sons, Robert B. Jr., Springfield, Mo., and J. Bryant, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Missy Hamilton, Lawrence; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends after the services.
