John Phillip Metsker

Lone Star – Services for John Phillip Metsker, 90, Baldwin City, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lone Star Church of the Brethren. Burial will be in Washington Creek Cemetery.Mr. Metsker died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at Baldwin Care Center. He was born Feb. 17, 1916, on the family farm south of Lone Star, the son of Andrew Elmer and Florence Cole Metsker. He graduated from Lawrence High School. He lived his entire life on the family farm.Mr. Metsker was a dairyman and farmer. He worked for BA Green Construction, Hankhamer Construction, Sunflower Ammunition Plant and retired from Truman Medical Center as the lead refrigeration engineer. He was a founding member of Rural Water District 2, where he served on the board from 1964 to 2005. He was also a 40-year member of the Colyer Cemetery Board. He married Bettie-Lou Grant on Nov. 18, 1946, in Lawrence. She survives, of the home. Other survivors include three sons, Andy and wife Deb, Leavenworth, and David and wife LuAnn, and Phillip, all of Lawrence; two daughters, Margaret Kalb and husband Kermit, Wellsville, and Merry Wilde and husband Brad, Overbrook; a sister, Ida Swank, Topeka; 13 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-grandchild.A daughter, Barbara Ellen, died in April 1956, and a sister also preceded him in death.Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
