Mass of Christian Burial for Bernadette A. “Bernie” Griggy, 83, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. today at Christ the King Catholic Church in Topeka. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence.Mrs. Griggy died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.She was born Jan. 6, 1924, in Detroit, the daughter of Gaylord W. and Nellie Meagher Gump. She moved from Topeka to Lawrence five years ago. She graduated from Kent State High School and attended Kent State University. She received a bachelor’s degree from Akron University in 1959, a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a doctorate of education from Akron University in 1980. She was an honorary member of Sigma Theta Tau at the University of Pittsburgh in 1968.Mrs. Griggy was a nurse in the Cadet Corps at Nichols U.S. Army Hospital in Kentucky in 1945, director of nursing at St. Thomas Hospital School of Nursing in Akron, Ohio, from 1947 to 1978, assistant director of nursing at Marymount College in Salina from 1980 to 1989, and assistant director of nursing, associate dean and professor at Baker University School of Nursing at Stormont-Vail hospital in Topeka from 1989 to 1998.She re-ceived honorary recognition from the Kansas State Nurse’s Association in 1991. She served on the board of directors for the Kansas League of Nursing and the education committee of the Kansas State Board of Nursing. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Topeka.She married Carl Griggy on Feb. 1, 1947, in Kent, Ohio. He died Dec. 19, 2000.A son, David Griggy, and a granddaughter also died earlier.Survivors include two sisters, Karen Roach, Fort Worth, Texas, and Ida Mae Morson, Kennesaw, Ga.; two brothers, John Gump and Gerald Gump, both of Kent, Ohio; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.The family suggests memorials to the Susan G.
