Ben August Barteldes

Services for Ben August Barteldes, 91, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Private burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Mr. Barteldes died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community. He was born Oct. 16, 1915, in Lawrence, the son of Otto and Helen Barteldes. He later unofficially changed his name to Ben.Mr. Barteldes was a lifelong Lawrence resident. He graduated in 1937 from Kansas University, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He later received his Master of Business and Accounting from Harvard University.He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked at Barteldes Seed Co. and owned TNT Food Products Inc., increasing its TNT popcorn and peanuts brand into national distribution.Mr. Barteldes served as Lawrence city commissioner and mayor. He was a board member for Lawrence Memorial Hospital and Grocery Manufacturers of America. He was a founder of Alvamar Golf and Country Club and of University State Bank, now Commerce Bank.He married Stella Jean “Toddy” Haines on Dec. 19, 1936. She died May 27, 2004.
