Johanna M. Markey

Memorial services for Johanna M. Markey, 82, Lawrence, will be at a later date in Lawrence and then in St. Louis. Cremation took place Dec. 28, in a private family service.Mrs. Markey died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, at her home.She was born July 18, 1925, in St. Louis, the daughter of Joseph and Ethel Matula.Mrs. Markey was a homemaker, as well as a den mother for her sons and a Welcome Wagon lady. She worked for Mattel Toy Co., Cool Ray Sunglasses and finally became a territory manager for Maybelline Cosmetics. In 1980, she won the territory manager of the year award from Maybelline. After retirement, she became a travel escort and visited many places, including China, Australia, Hong Kong, Spain, Fiji, New Zealand and others. She was an avid bridge player.She married James B. Markey on Dec. 17, 1948, in St. Louis. He died Dec. 30, 2004.Survivors include three sons, Jim and wife Debra, Memphis, Tenn., Craig and wife Ginger, Santa Rosa, Calif., and John and wife Hilary, Rancho Bernardo, Calif.; a daughter, Elaine and husband Stephen, Lawrence; a sister, Anna Joest, St. Louis; eight grandchildren, Malissa, Andrea, Alexandra, Craig Jr., Cori, Samantha, Alanna and Lara; and one great-grandchild, Alexandra Faith Arnett.The family suggests memorials to the donor’s favorite charity, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.Online condolences may be sent at www.rumsey-yost.com.
