Kathleen White Miles

A funeral Mass for Kathleen White Miles, 80, Clinton, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Clinton. Burial will be in Englewood Cemetery in Clinton.Mrs. Miles died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, in Clinton.She was born May 30, 1927, in Glenaire, the daughter of Mahlon Neill and Kathleen Kelly White. She attended Warsaw High School in Warsaw, William Jewel College and the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she earned degrees in journalism and Spanish.Mrs. Miles worked as an assistant magazine editor in St. Louis from 1948 to 1949; an editor for the Benton County Enterprise in Warsaw from 1950 to 1959; a reporter and columnist for the Bethesda Chevy Chase Tribune in Bethesda, Md. from 1960 to 1969; and an editor, columnist, and reporter for the Clinton Daily Democrat in Clinton from 1970 to 1980, when she became publisher until the time of her death.She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She and her mother co-authored and published a number of books in the 1970s and 1980s including the three-volume History of Benton County. She authored a number of books including “Bitter Ground,” a history of the Civil War in Henry, Benton and St. Clair counties, “Henry County People in World War II” and many smaller books including “Hog Lot Cookbook.” Mrs. Miles and her mother operated The Printery and produced reprints of many Missouri county histories from the 1880s. She was a staunch Democrat and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1956. She enjoyed spending time with her dogs.She married Daniel Black Miles on Nov. 19, 1949, in Warsaw. He died in 1986.Mrs. Miles was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lydia White; a brother, Mahlon K. White; and a grandson, Daniel Miles.Survivors include two daughters, Ellen Miles Taylor, Lawrence, Kan., and Jane Miles-Smith, Kansas City, Mo.; three sons, Daniel Miles, Mahlon Miles and Frank Miles, all of Clinton; a sister, Jane White Brown, Kansas City, Mo.; 10 grandchildren, including Lydia Diebolt of Baldwin City, Kan.; and four great-grandchildren, including Alexandra Kate Terry of Baldwin City, Kan.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a rosary to follow at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Vansant-Mills Funeral Home in Clinton.The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Humane Society, 1805 E. 19th St., Lawrence 66044.
