Aristeo Rojas Ramirez

Funeral Mass for Aristeo Rojas Ramirez, 89, Horton, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Horton. Graveside services with military honors will be in St. Leo’s Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Ramirez died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007. He was born Sept. 3, 1918, in Horton, the son of Bicente and Monica Rojas Ramirez. Mr. Ramirez was a law enforcement officer in Horton, Holton and Hoxie. He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Horton as a mail carrier and was self-employed for many years. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3021, American Legion Post 7, St. Leo’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 834, all of Horton, Fraternal Order of Eagles 3417 in Holton, and the Kansas Peace Officers Association. He married Augustina Montez on Oct. 23, 1943, in Topeka. They shared 22 years of marriage. She died in June of 1965. He married Rebecca Torkelson in September of 1966 in Everest. She died in January of 2005. Mr. Ramirez was also preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons, Justin and Nicholas Ramirez; and a brother, Antonio Ramirez. Survivors include six sons, Marcus and wife Monica and Emil and wife Billie, both of Topeka, Aristeo A., Lawrence, George and wife Rogena, Shawnee, and Ronald, Overland Park; and Paul and wife Marie, Prairie Village; three daughters, Valeria Howland and husband John, and Rosalind Jennings and husband Joseph, all of Lawrence, and Anna Schroeder, Clearwater, Fla.; three brothers, Greg and wife Evelyn, and John and wife Darlene, all of Horton, and Tony, Lawrence; two sisters, Patricia Ortez, Horton, and Mary Ortez, Independence, Mo.; 23 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service to follow at 7 p.m. at Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, where the family will receive friends until 8:30 p.m. The family suggests memorials to the St. Leo’s Catholic Church or Abundant Life Hospice, sent in care of the mortuary, 909 Central Ave., Horton, KS 66439.
