Aya Higuchi

Private graveside services for Aya Higuchi, 89, Lawrence, were at Pioneer Cemetery in Lawrence.Mrs. Higuchi died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.She was born Nov. 5, 1918, in Madison, Wis., the daughter of Henry and Sueno Kitagawa Toki. She had lived in Lawrence since 1967, after moving with her husband from Madison.Mrs. Higuchi was a homemaker. She had worked as the executive assistant to the chief of the Madison Free Library for six years. Mrs. Higuchi also assisted her husband with his work at the University of Wisconsin and Kansas University for 40 years.She married Takeru Higuchi on Jan. 1, 1944, in Madison. He preceded her in death in 1987.Survivors include a daughter, Chie H. Craig, Madison; three sons, Kenji Higuchi, Spokane, Wash., Junji Higuchi, San Antonio, Texas, and Peter Higuchi, Stilwell; a brother, Akira Toki, Madison; two sisters, Toshi Suzuki, Washington, D.C., and Mari Kagawa, Honolulu, Hawaii; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club or to a charity of the donor’s choice, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.Online condolences may be sent to www.warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Higuchi.
