Pauline Elvira Scheve

Services for Pauline Elvira Scheve, 79, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence. Cremation will follow.Mrs. Scheve died Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.She was born Sept. 19, 1928, in Ainsworth, Neb., the daughter of Elmer and Mary Holm. She moved to Lawrence in 1963.She received a Bachelor of Science in education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1948. In 1970, she received a master’s degree in English in 1970 and Ph.D. in 1977, both from Kansas University.Mrs. Scheve taught high school starting at age 19. She also taught English at KU, Baker University and Ottawa University.She enjoyed 19th-century American literature and reading.She was involved with several civic and social organizations affiliated with KU, including the American Association of University Women. She was involved in League of Women Voters and Unitarian Fellowship. In the 1960s, she helped with the downtown Lawrence redevelopment project.She married Harold Richard Scheve in 1948. He died in 1987.She is survived by her sister, Patricia Scott, Moscow, Idaho; a brother, Frank Holm, Huntsville, Ala.; a daughter, Jane M. Neary, Eugene, Ore.; three sons, James J. Scheve, Springfield, Mo., Daniel L. Scheve, San Jose, Calif., and John H. Scheve, Forestville, Calif.; three grandsons, Isaac Betty and Jacob and Jesse Scheve; and a granddaughter, Molly Betty.The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.The family suggests memorials to Friends of the Lawrence Public Library and Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, sent in care of the funeral home.
