Richard Jon Toumi
Private services are planned for Richard Jon Toumi, 62, Lawrence.Mr. Toumi died Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, at his home after a long illness. He was born Dec. 19, 1944, in Brainerd, Minn., the son of Uno and Doris Toumi. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1969 with a degree in sociology.Mr. Toumi provided social services through Volunteers in Service to America to residents of New York City and also served juveniles and adults as a community organizer. He then taught English and history to members of the armed forces in Germany. He later worked in the trades in both Minnesota and Kansas and was a member of the Carpenters/Millwrights Union Local 1445.He married Elisabeth Caron in 1971. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include his mother, Doris Toumi, Brainerd, Minn.; two sisters, Nancy Callies and husband Eldon, Lake Shore, Minn., and Kathy Jensen and husband Alan, St. Michael, Minn.; two brothers, Tom and wife Lily, Huntington Beach, Calif., and Jim and wife Lynn, Duluth, Minn.; two sons, Jean and wife Coki, Kansas City, Mo., and Richard and wife Melinda, Lawrence; two grandchildren, Jaered and Charlotte; and many nieces, nephews and friends.The family suggests memorials to Heart of America Hospice, 3715 S.W. 29th St., Suite 100, Topeka 66614.
