Leonard J. "Len" Zeller 1929 - 2007 Lawrence
Mass of Christian burial for Leonard J. "Len" Zeller, 78, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence. Graveside services with military honors will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery.Mr. Zeller died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, at his home.He was born Jan. 10, 1929, in Clear Creek, Mo., the son of Leonard A. and Sophia Twenter Zeller. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland. He moved from Maryland to Lawrence in 1976.Mr. Zeller served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired as a lieutenant colonel on May 31, 1974. He worked as a real estate agent in Maryland. He started a battery business in Lawrence in 1976 and later expanded to Topeka, Kansas City, Mo., and Emporia. He was a member of American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14.He married Kathryn Sams on Feb. 14, 1951, in Fort Myer, Va. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a daughter, Robin Shade and husband Steve, Eudora; two sons, Randel and wife Deborah, Clifton, Va., and Ronald and wife Rebecca, Lawrence; a brother; Vernon, Booneville, Mo., a sister, Dee Birch, Tucson, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren, Ronald II, Subrina, Brian A., Bethany, Mike, Alexandra and Nathan.Mr. Zeller was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Bestgen, and a daughter, Katrina Lynn Zeller.A parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, after which the family will receive friends until 8:30 p.m. The family suggests memorials to the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 or the United Service Organization of Metropolitan Washington Inc., sent in care of the mortuary.Online condolences may be sent at <a href="http://www.warrenmcelwain.com">www.warrenmcelwain.com</a>, Subject: Zeller.
