Sidney S. Cooley

Sidney S. Cooley, 95, Topeka, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2007, in Topeka. He was cremated.He was born Sept. 5, 1911, in Abilene, the son of William Patton and Margaret Fowler Hislop Cooley. He moved to Mountain Grove, Mo., in 1919, where he graduated from high school. He majored in dairy science and poultry husbandry at the University of Missouri, Columbia, where he was a sprinter on the track team.Mr. Cooley served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He worked for Russell Stover in Kansas City and Swift and Co. in Parsons and Salina. He owned and operated Salina Valley Hatchery for 50 years. He competed in numerous professional fishing tournaments throughout the U.S.He married Lenore Allen in 1942. She died in 2001.Mr. Cooley was also preceded in death by a grandson.Survivors include three sons, Sidney, Topeka, James, Lawrence, and Robert, Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Virginia DuPont, Topeka; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.The family will host a memorial fishing trip in his honor from Wednesday, Sept. 5, to Saturday, Sept. 8, on the White River in Arkansas, where his ashes will be spread.E-mail condolences may be sent at scooley@yis.us.
