Felix Robert Burkhart

Funeral services for Felix Robert Burkhart, 90, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.Mr. Burkhart died Monday, Aug. 13, 2007, at Pioneer Ridge Nursing Home.He was born Dec. 23, 1916, in Searcy, Ark., the son of Robert P. and Essie E. Harrison Burkhart. He received a bachelor’s degree from Kansas University in 1981.Mr. Burkhart served in the U.S. Army for three years before joining the U.S. Navy in 1940. He served during World War II and the Korean War as an air gunners mate and retired in 1957 as a chief petty officer with 20 years of service. He later worked as an air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Administration and retired in 1981.He attended Free Methodist Church in Lawrence. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Institute, Fleet Reserve Association of Washington, D.C., and Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 of the American Legion in Lawrence.Mr. Burkhart married Berta Lee Collom on Dec. 14, 1942, in Searcy, Ark. She died in 1969. He married Evelyn Pauline Leigeber May on June 7, 1973, in Lawrence. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two sons, Robert, Denver, and Scott, Lawrence; three stepsons, David May, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Daniel and Douglas May, both of Lawrence; a brother, Joe Norton, Boonville, Ark.; a stepsister, Glodeen Stutts, Bonita, La.; and three grandchildren, Sean, Nicole and Nicholas.The family suggests memorials to Free Methodist Building Fund, sent in care of the mortuary.The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.Online condolences may be sent at www.warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Burkhart.
