Phillip Shaw Paludan 1938 - 2007 Springfield
Springfield, Ill. - Memorial services for Phillip Shaw Paludan, 69, Springfield, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield.Mr. Paludan died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, at his home.He was born Jan. 26, 1938, in St. Cloud, Minn., the son of Paul and Marguerite Shaw Paludan. He received Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from Occidental College and a doctorate from the University of Illinois.Mr. Paludan taught at Kansas University for more than 30 years. He held visiting appointments at Rutgers University and University College Dublin, Ireland.He was a professor of history and the Naomi B. Lynn Distinguished Chair in Lincoln Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield. He was the author of four books on the Civil War era. He received the Lincoln Prize for his study of Lincoln's presidency and the Barondess Lincoln Award from the New York City Civil War Round Table. He lectured at Kansas University, Ohio Northern University and the University of Nebraska.Mr. Paludan received postdoctoral fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities and Harvard Law School. He also received a diploma of honor from Lincoln Memorial University and an honorary doctorate from Lincoln College. He was a board member of the Abraham Lincoln Association and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.Survivors include his wife, Marty; two daughters, Karin Sorey and Kirsten Paludan; three stepsons, Jim, Brett and Cody Hammond; a stepdaughter, Jill Donatelli; and five stepgrandchildren.The family suggests memorials to the Lincoln Legacy Lecture Series at the University of Illinois at Springfield, UIF, One University Plaza, MS PAC 591, Springfield, IL 62703.Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel in Springfield is in charge of arrangements.
