Robert M. Brooks

Funeral services for Robert M. Brooks, 77, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence. Military graveside services, conducted by American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14, will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.Mr. Brooks died Saturday, April 28, 2007, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. He was born Oct. 28, 1929, in Washington, D.C., the son of Robert C. and Jeannette M. Stokes Brooks. He was a graduate of Calvin Coolidge High School in Washington and attended the University of Maryland for two years.He was a member of the U.S. Air Force and a veteran of the Korean War. He served from 1950 to 1954.Before moving to Lawrence in 1979, he owned and operated Bob’s Appliance Service in St. Petersburg, Fla. After moving to Lawrence he worked as an electrician at Kansas University for five years and for Vormehr Galleries for four years.He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He also was a past post commander and member of American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14, a member of the Sons of Union Civil War Veterans and the Lecompton Historical Society, and was a volunteer at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He married Mary K. Riester on June 17, 1967, in St. Petersburg. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include a daughter, Vicki Vormehr and companion Vance Freeman, Lawrence, and three grandchildren, Nate, Amy and Katy.The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
