Harold L. Steward

Funeral services for Harold L. Steward, 86, Lawrence, will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Belleville Wesleyan Church in Belleville. Burial will be in Belleville Cemetery.Mr. Steward died Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born March 18, 1921, in Detroit, Kan., the son of Homer and Florence Wright Steward. He moved to Republic County as a child and received his education at Union Valley School. He moved to Lawrence from Belleville in 1998.Mr. Steward farmed for more than 60 years. He also worked for the Rural Electric Association and in construction. He enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling. He was a member of Belleville Wesleyan Church, where he served on the church board and was church treasurer. He was also a former member of the Union Valley school board. He attended Lawrence Free Methodist Church while living in Lawrence.He married Dorothy Cochran on May 11, 1941, in Belleville. They shared almost 66 years of marriage. She survives, of the home.Survivors include a son, Marvin, Wichita; a daughter; Darlene Atkinson and husband Leslie, Lawrence; a sister; Pauline Allred, Shidler, Okla., five grandchildren, Kimberly Tilley, Denise Alphson, Vicki Reynolds, Brian Atkinson and Angela Steward; and 10 great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, George; and a granddaughter, Cynthia Atkinson.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.The family suggests memorials to Lawrence Free Methodist Church, Heart of America Hospice or Oklahoma Wesleyan University, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.Online condolences may be sent at www.warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Steward.
