Baldwin City – A Mass of Christian burial for Donald F. Shay, 78, Baldwin City, will be at noon Saturday at Annunciation Catholic Church in Baldwin City. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Baldwin City.Mr. Shay died Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born Nov. 5, 1928, in Edgerton, the son of Richard Andrew and EvaLena McMahan Shay. He graduated from Wellsville High School in 1947.Mr. Shay worked at Hercules Army Ammunition Plant in De Soto, where he met his future wife in the early 1950s. He and his wife both worked at Ford’s IGA in Baldwin City. He also worked at Baker University in Baldwin City as a carpenter and in the student union’s bowling alley. He retired in 1994.He was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church since 1957 and a member of the Lions Club in Baldwin City. He enjoyed fishing and trapping, collecting coins and growing flowers and tomatoes.Mr. Shay married Viola V. “Pat” Culbertson on April 8, 1952, in Lawrence. They shared more than 54 years of marriage. She died April 11, 2006.Survivors include two sons, Norman E. and wife Cindy, Overland Park, and Gregory A. and wife Margie, Kansas City, Mo.; three daughters, Karen E. Shay, Valerie L. Worley and husband Lewis, and Patricia D. Shay, all of Baldwin City; a sister, Mary Ellen Calwin, Topeka; a brother, Mike Shay and wife Jan, Paola; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pat; a son, Donald P.; and two brothers, Retus and J.C.The family will receive friends after a rosary at 6 p.m. today at the church.The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society or Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, sent to Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, P.O.
