Cynthia Jane Gaines Turner

Funeral services for Cynthia Jane Gaines Turner, 88, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Second Christian Church. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.Mrs. Turner died Thursday, March 29, 2007, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.She was born Nov. 25, 1918, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Dee and Lillian Edwards Gaines. She attended Emporia State Teachers College and graduated from Kansas University. Mrs. Turner worked for Hercules and the Ford Fellows Foundation. She was director of Ballard Community Center and started the I Can Be program for children. She ran for state representative from the 39th District in 1970.She was a member of Second Christian Church and belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Lawrence. She married Lawrence Turner on May 4, 1945, in Lawrence. He died Feb. 24, 2006. Mrs. Turner also was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia Thompson, Seattle; a son, Lawrence Thompson, Blue Springs, Mo.; a sister, Josephine Walker, Topeka; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
