Ryan Matthew Kanost

Services for Ryan Matthew Kanost, 22, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at College Avenue United Methodist Church in Manhattan. Private family graveside services will be at Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan. Mr. Kanost died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, in Lawrence after a pedestrian-car collision.He was born Oct. 11, 1983, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, the son of Michael and Jill Carpenter Kanost. He grew up and attended schools in Tucson, Ariz., and Manhattan and graduated from Manhattan High School in 2002.He was a senior at Kansas University, where he was a biology and Spanish major and preparing for a career in medicine.Mr. Kanost volunteered in the emergency room at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He enjoyed coaching youth basketball in Manhattan and Lawrence.Survivors include his parents, of Manhattan; two sisters, Laura Kanost and husband David Brooks, Lawrence, and Leah Kanost, Manhattan; a brother, Nathan, Lawrence; two grandmothers, Evelyn Kanost, Broomfield, Colo., and Janet Carpenter, San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and a niece, Lillian Brooks Kanost, Lawrence.The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home in Manhattan.The family suggests memorials to the Ryan Kanost Memorial Fund, which will be used to establish scholarship funds for youth basketball programs in Manhattan and Lawrence.
