John Allen Powell

Graveside services for John Allen Powell, 70, Quenemo, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Overbrook Cemetery.Mr. Powell died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2006, at his home.He was born April 6, 1936, in Weed, Calif., the son of Al and Josephine Kerr Powell. He grew up and attended schools in Vinland.Mr. Powell worked for his father in Lawrence remodeling homes. He joined the Carpenters Union in Lawrence and was an assistant superintendent for Harmon Construction Co. in Lawrence. He worked on Kansas University dormitories and Allen Fieldhouse. He also worked for the company in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arkansas. He became self-employed as a carpenter in 1963.He married Donna Ruth Hamill on June 22, 1953, in Olathe. She died Jan. 7, 2004.Two sons, Steven A., and Roger L., died earlier, and a grandson died earlier.Survivors include two sons, John R., Pomona, and Michael L., Quenemo; a daughter, Sherice Powell, Michigan Valley; a brother, Bill, Carbondale; five sisters, Betty Chalender, Linwood, Rosemary Robinson, Pomona, Judy Johanning, Worden, Dorothy Johanning, Baldwin, and Darlene Schwarz, Baldwin; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Ottawa.The family suggests memorials to the John Allen Powell Memorial Fund, sent in care of Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, P.O.
