Damon Higbie Jr.

Services for Damon “Junior” Higbie Jr., 86, Wellsville, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Wilson’s Funeral Home in Wellsville. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Baldwin.Mr. Higbie died Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born June 26, 1920, in LeLoup, the son of Damon and Thaisa Jones Higbie. He attended Pleasant Valley schools.Mr. Higbie served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, including 32 months in Panama. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant.He worked for the city of Wellsville for a year and Star Grain Lumber Yard for seven years. He was a construction worker for projects including bridges on Interstate 35 and the Baker University library. He was a maintenance worker for 13 years and locksmith for two years at Shawnee Mission schools.Mr. Higbie was a member of Wellsville American Legion Post No. 194 and Wellsville Baptist Church.He married LaDema June Carr on April 20, 1946, in Topeka. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two sons, Gary, Lawrence, and Dale, Pomona; two daughters, Diana DePriest, Topeka, and Karyn Kennedy; a sister, Agnes Gifford, Burlington; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.The family suggests memorials to Wellsville Baptist Church, sent in care of the funeral home, P.O.
