William A. Long

Services for William A. Long, 68, Stuart, Fla., will be at 7 p.m. today at First Southern Baptist Church in Eudora. Additional services and burial will be Saturday in Stuart.Mr. Long died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital while he was in the area attending funeral services for his brother-in-law.He was born Oct. 18, 1937, in Lawrence, the son of Raymond E. and Fern D. Kasson Long. He graduated from Eudora High School in 1956 and attended Kansas University.Mr. Long was a hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Service for 38 years. He was a geologist and topographer who helped to locate the highest point in Kansas. He was a charter member of First Southern Baptist Church in Eudora and a former board member of Chapel Crusaders in Stuart. He also served as pastor in Deerfield Baptist Mission and chaplain at Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Hobe Sound, Fla.He married Betty J. Todd on Nov. 15, 1959, in Eudora. She died Dec. 8, 2004. He married Janice K. Gould on May 6, 2006, in Florence, Wis. She survives, of the home.Other survivors include two sons, William E. and wife Janine, Henderson, Nev., and Timothy T. and wife Kimberly, Stuart, Fla.; a daughter, Nancy C. Eckel, Lake Worth, Fla.; his mother, Eudora; a brother, John and wife Becky, San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Mary Beem, Eudora; a brother-in-law, Duane Hayes, Eudora; seven grandchildren, Michael and Corey King, David Nadler, Jonathan Eckel, and Rachael, Marshal and Eddie Long; and many nieces and nephews.The family suggests memorials to the First Southern Baptist Church Building Fund, 1103 Main Street, Eudora 66025.Online condolences may be sent at www.rumsey-yost.com.
