Wilbert Robert Whiteside

Services for Wilbert Robert Whiteside, 85, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Regular Missionary Baptist Church in Lawrence. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Mr. Whiteside died Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.He was born July 12, 1921, in Lawrence, the son of Charles and Harriet Allen Whiteside.He served as a staff sergeant during World War II. He worked as a paint supervisor for Kansas University and retired in 1983. He was a member of First Regular Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as deacon for more than 50 years and was involved in the men’s chorus.He married Thelma E. Kaiser on March 1, 1944, in Lawrence. She died earlier.A daughter, Ina Usneld, also died earlier.Survivors include a daughter, Jeanie Verner, Lawrence; and two grandchildren.The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.The family suggests memorials to First Regular Missionary Baptist Church, sent in care of the mortuary.Online condolences may be sent at www.warrenmcelwain.com, subject: Whiteside.
