Donald Howard McConnell 1924 - 2006
Services for Donald Howard McConnell, 82, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence. Private family graveside services with military honors will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. McConnell died Nov. 5, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born April 6, 1924, in Lawrence, the son of Howard and Elma Hunzicker McConnell. He attended Lawrence schools and graduated from Kansas University in 1949 with a degree in mechanical engineering and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He was a lifelong resident of Lawrence.Mr. McConnell served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and attained the rank of captain. He and his father operated McConnell Lumber Company and built custom homes. He was elected to the City Commission in 1959 and served for four years. He was vice mayor, a member of the Bert Nash Mental Health Board and served on the Parks and Recreation Board. He was a board member of Watkins Museum, a member and past president of the Lawrence Cosmopolitan Club and was a life member of the KU Alumni Club, KU Gold Medal club and Endacott Society. He was an Associate Director for the Kansas University Housing Department and retired in 1989. He was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church for more than 70 years.Mr. McConnell married Bertie Grace Ross on May 22, 1944, in Lincoln, Neb. She survives, of the home. Other survivors include a son, Donald Jr., Lawrence; a daughter, Judith McConnell-Farmer, Topeka; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. A son, William Craig, died in 1986.The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
