George W. Champney Sr, 1917 - 2006 Topeka
Topeka - Services for George W. Champney Sr., 89, Topeka, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Salvation Army Church in Topeka.Mr. Champney died Monday, May 1, 2006, in Topeka.He was born Jan. 8, 1917, in Enid, Okla. He became a brick mason while enrolled in the CCC program during the Depression.Mr. Champney started a demolition business, Champney Wrecking Co., in 1945 in Topeka, which was noted for the salvage and recycling of construction material. He was responsible for the demolition of the old Fraser Hall, Robinson Gym, Haworth Hall and other buildings at Kansas University. He was a lifelong member of the bricklayers union and Salvation Army Church.Survivors include his wife, Ruth Champney, of the home; a son, George W. "Kicker" Jr., Topeka; three daughters, Sue Randol, Topeka, Patricia Marvin, Lawrence, and Elaine Champney, Topeka; six grandchildren, Kevin, Randy, Jody, Erich, Eli and Lena; and two great-grandchildren.The family will greet friends after the services at the church.The family suggests memorials to the George W. Champney Sr. Memorial Fund, sent in care of the church, 1320 S.E. Sixth Ave., Topeka 66607.
