John Wertzberger

Services for John J. Wertzberger, 69, Scottsdale, Ariz., will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, at Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence. Private Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence.Dr. Wertzberger died Monday, May 1, 2006, in Scottsdale.He was born Nov. 8, 1936, in Topeka, the son of Melvin and Pearl Lindquist Wertzberger. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1954. He received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1959 and a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Kansas University in 1960. He completed his residency at KU Medical Center in 1968.Dr. Wertzberger served in the U.S. Army Missouri National Guard Hospital from 1964-71. He was discharged with the rank of major. He was a retired orthopedic surgeon. He was affiliated with many hospitals in the greater Kansas City area, Lawrence Memorial Hospital and Watkins Hospital at KU.He was chief of surgery at LMH in 1984, and a former president of the Kansas Orthopedic Society. He was president of Orthopedic Surgery Associates in Lawrence and an orthopedic consultant for the KU athletic department. Dr. Wertzberger was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Medical Association and many other organizations. He was on the board of directors of Lawrence National Bank and Mercantile Bank in Lawrence. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Wertzberger, Scottsdale, Ariz.; his mother, Pearl Wertzberger, Lawrence; four sons, Karl, San Francisco, Kurt, Oklahoma City, Ron Bramlage, Junction City, and Damien Bramlage, Denver; a daughter, Kirsten Krug, Lawrence; a brother, Ken, Lawrence; a sister, Phyllis McAdoo, Lawrence; and eight grandchildren.The family suggests memorials to the John Wertzberger MD Memorial Fund at the LMH Endowment Assn., sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
